Southampton manager Pochettino being lined up by Benfica

Southampton Football Club

Southampton manager Mauro Pochettino is wanted by Benfica, according to reports on the continent.

Southampton's appointment of Mauro Pochettino was one of the big shocks of the season, for the swiftness at which he replaced Nigel Adkins immediately in the wake of his sacking.

Pochettino had been lined up by Nicola Cortese for several months, even though he had just a short tenure in charge of Spanish club Espanyol behind him.

While many predicted doom and gloom for Southampton, Pochettino surely has only enhanced his reputation at the club.

He led them to impressive victories over Manchester City and Liverpool, and while there were disappointing results too - namely a loss at home to relegated QPR, overall he quelled any immediate doubts over his readiness for the challenge.

While Southampton fans are digesting the season that was, and working out just which manager, Adkins or Pochettino, would have been their best bet going into next season, the Argentine may well end up loving and leaving them this summer.

This talk comes from Spanish newspaper El Confidencial which says the manager is being lined up by Portuguese giants Benfica as their next manager.

Benfica are coming off the back of a devastating end to the season, in which their treble hopes went up in smoke - losing the Europa League Final to Chelsea, suffering a late defeat to hand the league to Porto, and losing the Portuguese Cup Final to Vitoria Guimares.

This has placed an intolerable amount of pressure on coach Jorge Jesus, who had a public falling out with striker Oscar Cardozo in their most recent cup final defeat.

The chance for Pochettino to manage Benfica would be one which will be hard to turn down if it came his way.

He even admitted he would leave the Saints if chairman Nicola Cortese was forced out, underlining he feels no major loyalty towards the club itself.

Would the Benfica job be too much too soon for him? Many said that about Southampton, and if he gets the opportunity he might as well seize it while the going is good.

Southampton fans can you hang onto Pochettino? What do you think?
