The Bolton-born standup's two companies, Goodnight Vienna and Hussein Traders, have a combined income of £32.8m as a result of DVD sales and live arena shows, according to a Sunday Mirror report based on figures lodged with Companies House.
Michael McIntyre is second in the list, with earnings of more than £21m – a significant increase from the £5m he filed in the previous two years – while Liverpudlian John Bishop is in third place with £6.3m.
A further 11 comedians recorded earnings of more than £1m, with Sarah Millican the highest-earning female comic thanks to an income of £2m. Other high earners include Jack Dee (£5.2m), Russell Howard (£4m) and Frankie Boyle (£3.3m).
Other comedians, including Miranda Hart and Lee Evans, do not channel their earnings through a company. Evans is thought to rival Kay as a result of his committed touring schedule, DVD sales and acting career.
