With Falcao set to move to France with AS Monaco could Remy Cabella head the other way from Montpellier?
AS Monaco look to be on the brink of completing perhaps one of the biggest transfer coups of all time; Colombian goal-machine Radamel Falcao is reportedly set to join the club for a fee believed to be in the region of £50 million.
It comes on the same day as they announced the signing of Ricardo Carvalho from Real Madrid and a week after completing a mega double swoop for FC Porto stars Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez.
For Atletico it is a massive loss. In the 27-year-olds two-year stint at the Vicente Calderon he banged in an incredible 70 goals in 90 appearances. That followed his 72 goals in 87 games tenure with FC Porto prior to his La Liga career.
So there was little wonder the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona were among the many clubs said to be keeping tabs on the player.
Now Atletico face a steep challenge attempting to find a striker who can offer anything near as similar a goal-threat as the outgoing striker the fans dubbed ‘El Tigre’.
But at least they have a handsome transfer kitty to dabble with this summer; perhaps even enough to snap up this Arsenal target.
Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella has had an impressive 2013 which has undoubtedly caught the eye of many a European suitor; with Arsenal said to be just one of many.
It was something addressed by club chairman Laurent Nicollin recently who labelled him with an unimaginable price tag:
"He is non-transferable. The desire of the club is to keep Remy - he was told and knows this. If a club arrives and offers €100million, it will be discussed though."
An obvious deterrent to those interested.
However his father did offer an insight recently into the clubs who were actively after his son; and while Arsenal were not present Atletico did get a mention:
"I take care of my son regarding his future. Contacts in Italy? No, honestly, there is nothing yet. Marseille? We discussed with them and is a real possibility. There is also Atletico Madrid. Stay in France or to Spain? For me, staying in France. He could also stay in Montpellier since there is a contract".
So while those comments gave extra credence to the current theory that he is likely to stay at Montpellier or move to Marseille the interest from Atletico is only bound to grow after they get a large influx of cash.
Sure debts have to be covered but with Arda Turan also wanting to leave Los Colchoneros they may have to dive into the budget slightly in order to get their man.
In reality talk is of a potential valuation of somewhere between £8 and £15 million to convince Montpellier to do business.
But with Younes Belhanda definitely leaving this summer it is also very likely they will do everything to hold onto to Cabella this summer.
But Atletico might just have the money to do the talking.
Where do you think Remy Cabella will be playing next season?
