Long was linked with a high profile move to Anfield over the first half of last season but seemed reluctant to comment on the speculation as West Brom were playing superbly at the time.
How things have changed because Long scored just four goals over the second half of the season as the Baggies fell off the European pace towards mid-table obscurity eventually finishing eighth.
Liverpool will be looking for some attacking support this summer as Luis Suarez is banned for the first month and a half of next season, with just Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini likely to be leading the attack.
There has been no indication that Brendan Rodgers is ready to welcome back Andy Carroll which means the club are more than likely going to be in the market for another squad player.
Long is certainly someone who could do a job in the Liverpool attack because he has many of the natural qualities which make him suitable for the pure way that Liverpool like to play their football.
He may also jump at the chance to move to the club after they recovered admirably after a poor start to the season and will now be expecting to mount a serious push for the top four next year.
Long is likely to play against an English defence which is packed with the best players from top Premier League sides.
If he plays well and scores then Rodgers may suddenly become very interested in him because it’s just another example that he can perform under pressure, with great passion in a very hostile environment.
Rodgers won’t just be watching the game expecting Long to score though, his performance will be studied in a much more in depth way.
You can have an impact on this current Liverpool team if you are just as effective off the ball as you are on it.
If Long can run the England defence ragged with his movement and if he can get involved in terms of assists and solid build up play, that’s the sort of thing Rodgers will be looking for as well as goals.
Long has a year left to run on his current West Brom deal so he could reject the option of a further year and jump at the chance to sign for Liverpool when it looked out of the question earlier in the season.
His status in the Liverpool squad would be purely down to how hard he wanted to work at Anfield but he can at least give himself a chance of the deal happening by playing out of his skin against a very good team at Wembley.
Do you think Long can re-ignite Liverpool's interest?
