Leandro Damiao is worth the trouble for Tottenham Hotspur

The Brazilian striker is being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur once again this summer, and despite his frustrating history with Spurs, Damiao would be a superb signing.

Given that this is now at least the third summer when Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Internacional striker Leandro Damiao, Spurs fans can be forgiven for reacting with a large degree of cynicism when they see his name in the press.

January might have been the final straw for some fans, with a deadline day move to Damiao seemingly faltering at the final hurdle leaving Spurs with two out of form strikers for the rest of the season.

However if Tottenham Hotspur can finally get their man, Damiao could prove to be worthy of the trouble the club have taken in their pursuit of him.

At 23, Damiao is still developing as a player, and he has already demonstrated the talent to suggest he could be a top class striker one day. Although he is inconsistent, his performances at the London Olympics, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals in five games, showed that he can produce when on a big stage.

He has the physical presence to play as a lone striker in Spurs current 4-2-3-1 system, and the all round ability to work as a forward in a 4-3-3 formation, which could be Andre Villas-Boas’ preferred option next season.

Damiao’s eye for goal has been proven in his time in Brazil, and he is able to combine that with effective hold up play, something that Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe have struggled to do this season.

Spurs will be linked with plenty of strikers this summer, and it would be tempting to favour a move for a proven European star like David Villa or Roberto Soldado. However taking a risk on Damiao could pay off massively for Spurs, and if he was brought in alongside a more experienced name Spurs might finally have the stable strike force capable of firing them into the top three in the Premier League.
