Wigan Athletic's five best players this season

We take a look at the Wigan Athletic squad and pick the five best players from the 2012-13 season.

It has been an historic and at the same time disappointing season at the DW Stadium.

Roberto Martinez first managed to lead his side to a magnificent FA Cup victory against Manchester City before suffering relegation just days later.

It will forever be a season Wigan fans struggle to forget but who made it so?

Here are our top five Wigan Athletic players for 2012-13...

Shaun Maloney

In my eyes undoubtedly the best player at Wigan Athletic this season has been the Scottish international playmaker.

Just looking at his statistics for a team that ended up relegated helps to highlight his importance to Wigan. Eight assists and six goals, including some vital ones in important games, just shows the talent of the 30-year-old.

Unfortunately it looks as if that talent will have to be showcased in The Championship next season.

Arouna Kone

On his day the Ivorian has been simply unplayable this season.

Many will argue that his day did not come round often enough and that is a fair criticism; but his pace and work ethic have been a thorn in the side many a tea this season and his 11 goals and five assists make him directly responsible for 16 of the 47 goals his team scored this season.

A great purchase and it will be interesting to see what the future holds.

James McCarthy

The only one of Wigan’s players to play all 38 Premier League games and that is saying something considering their woeful injury record this term.

Once again his performances have got others tongues wagging as the vultures circle around the relegated carcass at the DW Stadium and their interest is a testament to yet another great campaign.

Emmerson Boyce

A consistent and versatile presence in the Wigan defence the veteran defender even popped up with the odd goal here and there in an excellent campaign.

One of the players certain to stay with the club and he should fare well in the Championship.

James McArthur

Another player who looks set to leave after another solid year. At times he found himself out of favour with Roberto Martinez but when called upon he was always one of the best performers on show.

Did we get it wrong? Who do you think is missing?
