Picking Arsenal's five best players this season

Cazorla Arsenal Debut

We take a look at the Arsenal squad and pick the five best players from the 2012-13 season.

Arsenal have had a mixed campaign with some serious lows and the occasional highs throughout but in the end they were once again left empty handed in the elusive search for silverware.

They did however manage to hold off the attack of rivals Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season to ensure another season of Champions League football; but who really made it possible?

Here is our top five Arsenal players for 2012-13...

Santi Cazorla

Quite easily Arsenal’s best player this season and without him who knows how this campaign would have ended up.

An astute piece of business by Arsene Wenger in the summer as the Spaniard has been regularly influential when it truly matters.

12 goals and 11 assists isn’t a bad return either.

Mikel Arteta

The bedrock of this Arsenal side has been the former Everton man. He has featured in 34 games this season and has one of the best pass success ratings in the entire league.

Nearly everything Arsenal do comes via their midfield maestro who has once again proven his worth to the Gunners cause.

Theo Walcott

While he did spend much of the season playing under the spectre of his contract negotiations there is no doubt about his impact in 2012-13.

14 goals and 11 assists from either the right wing or up front highlights his claim.

Laurent Koscielny

The Frenchman has had what you could call an up and down season but there is little doubt that he has been the catalyst in their recent resurgence that saw them claim fourth place.

He has replaced the over-rated and over-used Thomas Vermaelen with little in the way of fuss and his match-winning performance against Newcastle United was the perfect summary of his impact to the season.

Lukas Podolski

OK lynch mob put down the pitchforks and torches I get it; not everyone has been completely convinced by the form of the German this year.

But let’s face it, sometimes the stats do not lie. Podolski has scored 11 goals and notched up nine assists on top; a 20-goal direct influence that only Walcott and Cazorla can better.

Deserving his place in the top five.

Did we get it wrong? Who do you think is missing?
