Chelsea weekend round-up: Including Mourinho and Marin

Marko Marin

News and gossip from the past 48 hours at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were beaten 5-3 by Manchester City in Rafa Benitez’s last ever game in charge of the club last night. Goals from Juan Mata and two from Ramires were not enough to beat their Premier League rivals at the Yankee Stadium in New York.

Rafa Benitez’s interim stint in charge is now coming to an end and it appears we know where he will be managing next. While the Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis may have backtracked slightly since he has revealed that Benitez is the man he wants to replace Walter Mazzarri; who will become the new Inter Milan coach in July.

Florent Malouda says he ‘cannot wait’ to get away from Chelsea and start playing regular football again. The player is now a free agent after his contract with the club expired this weekend and after a year where he was banished to train with the reserves he says he is fit and ready to get going again. He has offers from France and Brazil.

One player who is not sure about his Chelsea future is winger Marko Marin. The German has struggled to have any impact since arriving from Werder Bremen last summer. However he is still hopeful of making a success of himself at Stamford Bridge but admits the next manager will ultimately decide his future.

Jose Mourinho’s return is reportedly completed. The fees involved are said to be a four-year-contract worth £50million; making him the highest paid coach in the history of the Premier League.

But he may not be able to start the season from the bench. He cannot serve his current two-game ban for a sending off in the Copa Del Rey final in La Liga as they are running out of games. Therefore the Spanish Football Association will pass the ban on to FIFA who are likely to order the FA to impose it on ‘The Special One’. The suspension will see him miss the FA Cup games and potentially the Community Shield.

Romelu Lukaku says he will wait on the arrival of a new manager before deciding on his future. The Belgian has been in great form on loan art West Brom this season and another loan deal is being mooted. However he would like first team football at The Bridge.
