AS Monaco have put any doubters over their financial clout and footballing ambition well and truly to shame after breaking into their very large coffers to snap up James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho; both from Portuguese champions FC Porto.
The combined £60 million deal looks like being just the first of many big signings set to come through the doors at the Stade Louis II. With the clubs perfect mix of vast riches, luxury destination and tax-haven principles where else would multi-millionaire footballers want to play?
Well clearly not North London it seems as Moutinho was widely expected to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer; in fact some Portuguese sources even reported that a deal was set to be completed just last week.
But in the build-up to his transfer to Monaco there were several instances of misinformation from the player, club and his agents about his future:
“Right now, nothing will make me change clubs. I am extremely happy here and the most important thing is happiness and winning titles – We want to improve the campaign from last year, we want to improve on the European level,”
Those were the apparent words of Moutinho just two days before signing for Monaco and in the past few months there have been many instances of him saying he wants to leave or indeed wants to stay, either personally or via his agent.
So how can this give Arsenal hope for Jovetic?
Well like Moutinho Jovetic is a long-term target for the North London club but the signals regarding his future are mixed.
One minute he wants to stay, the next he is definitely leaving. The next time he is off to Juventus and after that Arsenal. One minute the club will sell and after that we hear that Arsenal are not even interested in him.
What we have learnt from the Moutinho saga is that until something is signed on the dotted line anyone involved will say anything in order to get the best deal for themselves.
This should give Arsenal hope that no matter what is said there is always a chance that at the end of the day it means absolutely nothing; and Jovetic may very well be on his way to Arsenal.
So while the toing and froing continues over the Stevan Jovetic deal Arsenal fans should make light of any comments; until a picture of Jovetic in an Arsenal shirt shaking hands with Arsene Wenger emerges.
And even then it might not be signed and sealed.
What do you male of the constant changes in the Jovetic story?
