Arsenal latest: Including Benteke and Arshavin

News and gossip from the past 24 hours at Arsenal.

Christian Benteke dominates the headlines in relation to Arsenal today. It was reported in The Sun today that the Belgian international had stated in a press meeting whilst on international duty:

If Aston Villa say I must stay, I won’t necessarily accept that. I do not in any way want to feel I didn’t get the most out of my career. I try to get everything. If the chance comes up for me to join a club like Arsenal, I’m convinced we can reach a compromise where everyone comes out a winner.”

These comments have infuriated Paul Lambert who insisted he was going nowhere and needed a reality check.

But Benteke’s agent Eris Kismet has distanced his client from the comments. He says the Villa striker was ‘disgusted’ by the apparent misquote and that from now on he would not be speaking to the media.

Zenit Saint Petersburg have announced they will not be bringing back Andrey Arshavin in a similar fashion to Anatoly Tymoschuk. The Bayern Munich midfielder is set to re-join the Russian outfit this summer but the clubs Italian manager Luciano Spalletti says there is no interest in the player their end as he has not played enough football this season.

The Mirror have reported on the cost-per-goal price of Moroccan striker Maraoune Chamakh. While the former Bordeaux player signed for a free transfer but his massive wages have cost Arsenal £14 million - an average of £1 million a goal for the player.

The Metro report that Arsenal are on the brink of signing Ashley Williams from Swansea City. It is believed that Arsene Wenger is ready to stump up the £10 million being quoted for the player by the South Wales outfit as he looks to build his squad.

Williams has been linked with the club amidst the talk over Thomas Vermaelen’s future. However Arsene Wenger has urged the Belgian to stay at The Emirates and fight for his first team place.

Arsenal goalkeeping target Victor Valdes has reportedly said goodbye to his team-mates and Barcelona staff members. He is expected to leave this summer and arranged a special dinner and evening in order to break the news of his imminent departure. AS Monaco are also in contention.
