There are some surprising and unsurprising names in the top five ranked clubs when it comes to own goals - Manchester United the top beneficiary.
Luck in football is a bit of an enigma but it comes in its purest form when an opponent decides to head or hoof the ball into his own net doing all of the hard work for the opposition.
There are various theories as to why particular sides get more own goals than others such as being able to keep the ball in their opponent’s final third for longer.
In that sense sides can create their own luck but it still takes a big error for someone to put the ball into their own goal, creating humiliation as well as knocking the immediate confidence of that player and team.
However, the standard and quality of modern day defending means that even if a side crosses the ball under the opposition’s crossbar, there is a good chance a defender will get his head on it and get it away from danger.
Any successful campaign needs to have a lot of luck along the way to provide that edge, keep a side one step ahead and it’s what makes the game so much more enjoyable.
Here are the five luckiest Premier League teams from the season just finished.
1) Manchester United (Six own goals in their favour)
2) Fulham (Five own goals in their favour)
3) Liverpool (Four own goals in their favour)
4) Tottenham Hotspur (Four own goals in their favour)
Are you surprised? Is it typical United benefited the most?
