Liverpool latest: Including Begovic in and Downing out

All of the latest news, rumours and stories coming out of Anfield.

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has hinted he could be tempted into a move to Liverpool. The shot stopper has been touted as a replacement for Pepe Reina but says he’s not had any concrete offers, which he hopes means that one will arrive in the near future.

Stewart Downing, Jonjo Shelvey and Sebastian Coates are among the names of players Liverpool are thought to be taking offers for. Downing is the most surprising name after he sensationally turned his form around after being told he could leave the club last January.

Jeremy Menez has withdrawn from the France squad which will tour South America next month. The Paris Saint-Germain striker could now be firmly back on Liverpool’s radar, as they could take advantage and talk to him over a move while he recovers from a back problem.

Liverpool are mulling over a possible move for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas. The Celta Vigo front man could be available on a very cheap deal this summer, if his current side are relegated down to the second tier of Spanish football, which would reduce his buy out clause.

Marseille are poised to make the first move for Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel. That could force Liverpool’s hand, with the club thought to have scouted him earlier in the season. Capel has scored five goals and provided nine assists over the course of the current season.

Liverpool’s interest in Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has been re-ignited after reports Villa are ready to sell him at a loss. Villa paid £24 million for Bent in January 2011 but he’s failed to feature under Paul Lambert meaning Liverpool could resurrect their interest in the forward.

Liverpool could face a strong challenge from Inter Milan for 18-year-old centre back Kurt Zouma. Zouma has been one of the most consistent players for St Etienne this season, which has attracted the interest of Liverpool, with Brendan Rodgers always looking to add to his youth ranks.

Brendan Rodgers says he wants the future of striker Andy Carroll to be resolved sooner rather than later. Carroll seems to be on the verge of a £12 million move to West Ham United, where he’s been on loan for the majority of the season after failing to break into Rodgers’ plans at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers has hinted that he will only be signing players who have a winning mentality. Liverpool have been linked with several cheap deals this summer, but Rodgers has insisted the club will pay to get a player if he has the right consistency and mentality.
