Aston Villa latest: Including Benteke comments and released players

Benteke 2

All of the latest news, information and rumours about Aston Villa.

Christian Benteke has indicated that he won’t stay at the club, even if Villa offer him a new deal. The Belgian forward says he wants to make the most of his career, which means he could move on if a top side comes in with a competitive offer for his transfer.

Stiliyan Petrov will be offered a coaching role with the Midlands club ahead of next season. The former captain has been suffering with a battle against cancer, but there is extra light at the end of the tunnel with the news the club are preparing a job for him to take after his retirement from the game.

Aston Villa forward Darren Bent is expected to move on this summer, at a fraction of the £24 million the club paid for him. Bent has barely featured under the regime of Paul Lambert, cutting a frustrated figure and warming the bench while Christian Benteke has taken all the headlines.

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar says he’s excited and already looking ahead to the new season. Villa narrowly escaped relegation down to the Championship and the skipper has said the entire club are determined to make sure that a repeat of last season’s struggles never appear again.

Shay Given is among the names expected to be released by Aston Villa. Given has played second fiddle to American goalkeeper Brad Guzan who has been one of the stand out players for the club in a difficult season. Whether Given will play on or retire is unclear.

Aston Villa fans have said the club will be better off without Charles N’Zogbia. The winger has been linked with high profile moves to Borussia Dortmund and Monaco, with a local paper revealing the opinion of fans which indicates they wouldn’t be bothered if he did leave.

Richard Dunne is a free agent after being released by Aston Villa. The central defender has had an injury plagued season which has prevented him from making any progress and breaking back into the first team at a time when the youngsters at Villa seemed to be craving some experience around them.

Liam Prynn has become the latest teenage sensation to join Aston Villa from the football league. The 16-year-old will link up with Villa’s youth team after a compensation package was agreed between the Midlands club and Torquay United of League Two.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is hoping his former side Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final this weekend. Lambert had a good spell with Dortmund and has described the move to the German club as the great decision he ever made.
