A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Chelsea trio Frank Lampard, Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole will leave the Blues’ USA tour early in order to join up with the England squad. The three players will be available for the first friendly against Manchester City on Thursday, but will miss the second. Roy Hodgson has been critical of Premier League clubs scheduling these post season tours.
Lampard has said that he is hoping to extend his stay at Chelsea beyond next season, after recently agreeing a new deal at the Blues.
“I want it to continue for as long as possible. I signed a one-year extension but I’d love to be part of the next few years at Chelsea, developing the young players that we’ve seen come in this season,” he said.
There has been speculation that Jose Mourinho will look to offload David Luiz when he takes over at Chelsea, with Real Madrid and Barcelona interested in the Brazilian defender. Mourinho has doubts about Luiz’s defensive ability, and might replace him with Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
One man Mourinho is apparently keen to see at Stamford Bridge is Sami Khedira, who he might try and bring with him from Real Madrid. The defensive midfielder would reportedly cost around £20million, and, unlike some in the Real Madrid squad, has a close relationship with Mourinho.
Thibaut Courtois has backed Chelsea’s policy of sending their young players out to gain experience on loan, and suggested that in two or three years they will the talent available to win everything.
Despite rumours that he had agreed a deal to join French side Monaco, Radamel Falcao has said that he is currently happy at Atletico Madrid and has not given too much thought to any possible move this summer. Chelsea have been linked with the striker throughout last season, but seemed to have missed out to big-spending Monaco.
West Ham are hoping that the appeal of living in London will see Romelu Lukaku choose to go on loan there rather return to West Brom. Lukaku’s future is still unclear, with several sides likely to be interested if Chelsea let him leave for the season again. Lukaku himself has suggested he would be open to a move to Dortmund.
