Zieler never played a senior game for Manchester United and has undergone a dramatic transformation since he left English football.
The 24-year-old is currently rated as one of the best young goalkeepers in Germany and his performances since joining Hannover have seen him play two games for the German national side.
Were it not for Manuel Neuer then he would probably be Germany’s number one at the moment.
Speculation continues over the future of Pepe Reina at Anfield, despite the fact the goalkeeper has reiterated his desire to stay with the club, suggesting he’s not thinking about going back to Spain.
However, Liverpool do seem to be in the market for a goalkeeper who can keep Reina on his toes in the same way that Brad Jones did earlier in the season.
Liverpool’s chances of getting Zieler are a little hard to judge because he’s at a German club where he’s playing regularly football and is on the fringes of the national team.
He also has two years left to run on his contract which makes the issue of a larger fee prominent, something that Liverpool will want to avoid.
However, they don’t have many options because plenty of English clubs will now be looking at Alex McCarthy of Reading and he could ultimately turn out to be a much more expensive player than Zieler.
Zieler does have experience of English football having played for the United youth teams and he spent a year on loan with Northampton Town in the Football League.
He’s in such a different position than the last time he was in England that it could be very difficult for Liverpool to tempt him back.
Their chances of getting him probably depend on the future of Reina because unless he leaves, it’s hard to see Zieler making this sort of move which may risk his place in the Germany side.
He’s also been used regularly in Europe with Hannover over the course of the season, which means there are going to be plenty of other teams who know all about his quality, consistency and potential.
He ticks all of the boxes Liverpool are currently looking for in potential signings; he’s young, he’s already playing at a top level and he has experience in English football.
It could be a very good way to stick it to the club’s greatest rivals but take the rumours with a pinch of salt because they look bland and lifeless otherwise.
Would Zieler be a good capture for Liverpool?
