Would Chelsea fans be happy to have Lukaku as first choice next year?

Romelu Lukaku has enjoyed a superb season at West Bromwich Albion, but is he prepared to be the leading man at Chelsea next season, or do the Blues need to sign another star name this summer?

With Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge inching ever closer after Real Madrid confirmed his departure last night, Chelsea fans might already be considering the club’s next order of business, which appears to be bringing in a new striker.

However their options are already becoming limited, with Radamel Falcao looking likely to go to Monaco, Robert Lewandowski still seemingly favouring a move to Bayern Munich and Manchester City reportedly ahead in the race for Edinson Cavani.

With this in mind, Romelu Lukaku’s second half hat trick against Manchester United on the last day of the season was a particularly timely reminder of the prolific striker Chelsea already have on their books.

It took the 20-year-old to 17 league goals this season, an amount that is even more impressive considering he has only started 20 matches for West Brom, and marked him out as a player who can bully any defence on his day.

Chelsea fans are certainly excited about Lukaku’s future at Stamford Bridge, but would they be happy if they started next season with the Belgian as first choice?

It would be a major gamble, and put a lot of pressure on him, but given their excellent attacking midfielders and Lukaku’s form this year, it could easily be a huge success, and even if not they have shown over the past 12 months how much they can achieve with a misfiring Fernando Torres leading the line.

There is also the fact that Lukaku would not be happy to sit on the bench for most of the season at Chelsea, as he aims to win a place in Belgium’s World Cup squad, so the Blues will likely either need to promise him playing time, or loan him out again.

He might not have the pulling power of a Falcao or a Cavani, but Lukaku has demonstrated at West Brom this season that he can be prolific in the Premier League, and if put at the head of Chelsea’s star studded line-up he could be even more effective next year.

What do you think, should Chelsea put their faith in Lukaku next year or is too early?
