Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has announced he will stand for re-election to his position on June 16, which means a promise Spurs will be dreading if they can't get Bale signed up to a new deal in time.
The last time Florentino Perez promised to buy a player just before elections to become president of Real Madrid, he said he’d buy Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and then did just that.
There’s no reason why he won’t look to make the same sort of promise with Gareth Bale of Tottenham Hotspur in a shameless act to try and preserve his own role at the Spanish club, despite the fact he’s expected to run unopposed.
The fact he had also 'promised' Bale to expected new boss Ancelotti, gives him even more incentive to go after the Welshman.
There have been plenty of media reports over the past 24 hours which have hinted towards preparations at White Hart Lane towards a new deal for Bale, which would see him become the best paid player in the history of the football club.
That would be a big surprise considering the strict financial regime Daniel Levy has instilled around the club but it’s something Spurs may have to consider if they want to have any chance of keeping the Welsh winger, and shows how keen they are to keep him.
Even if there is a mega-bid from Real, it's a clear indication Bale will not be hanging on this summer, but Spurs are clearly keen to get him signed up as soon as possible.
Given the breadth of time until the club elections over in Madrid, Spurs have a good chance to tie Bale down to a new deal, which will prevent him leaving this summer at least.
Florentino Perez is a man under pressure, because Real Madrid have had a terrible season by their normal standards; knocked out of the Champions League, beaten by Barcelona to the La Liga title and beaten in the Copa del Rey final by local rivals Atletico Madrid.
If Spurs can however get Bale signed up over the coming days and ahead of June 16, then Perez will have to start talking up other targets and looking elsewhere, because if he promises the Tottenham star to his supporters he may just be wasting his energies.
