Rooney for Bale? - The swap deal that would rock the Premier League

Could Manchester United offer Tottenham Hotspur Wayne Rooney in order to get hold of Gareth Bale this summer?

Manchester United are about to embark on their biggest summer of upheaval in recent memory as David Moyes takes over from Sir Alex Ferguson after the long awaited retirement of the United stalwart.

But it is not only in the managerial role where a high profile departure is expected at The Theatre of Dreams; as Wayne Rooney is expected to leave after handing in his transfer request a couple of weeks ago.

So where next for Wayne?

Name a big club in Europe and the chances are they have been linked with the England international in the past few weeks. The fact is no matter what your feelings are on Rooney he is an exceptional talent who will always attract the big boys when his availability is flagged up.

But what I am about to propose would certainly prove to be the biggest transfer of the summer if it came to fruition. There is currently no talk of this happening other than mooted interest from Manchester United in the player in question.

But could United swap Rooney for Gareth Bale? Seriously.

This would of course not be a straight swap. While Bale has increased his value this season Rooney’s has likely diminished ever so slightly. But an offer of £20 million plus Rooney might just do the trick if Moyes really wants to get his hands on Bale.

Bale surely wants to play Champions League football next season and get his hands on a Premier League title. Now he can wait till he is 29 to make the move like Robin Van Persie did or go for it now.

Spurs are remiss to letting him go regardless but if they were to take the plunge they would surely prefer to receive a big name forward as part of any negotiations.

Rooney is exactly that and if he could find his form at another club next term then he is without doubt a 30-goal a season player.

Spurs are also bereft of striking options and while losing Bale would be a massive body-blow at least Rooney would act as padding.

When you first consider the swap it seems ridiculous but when you really give it some thought, on paper, it does not seem as far-fetched as you might think.

Rooney out and Bale in? It is just a thought but a tantalising one for anybody who loves a blockbuster summer transfer.

Is this deal a possibility? Spurs fans would you accept money and Rooney for Bale?
