Expect Arsenal to move decisively in the transfer market this summer.
Arsene Wenger has given his clearest hint yet that Arsenal are to be major players in the transfer market this summer.
Speaking after the Newcastle win, which saw the Gunners clinch a Champions League qualifying place, the manager told Sky Sports:
"It depends what you call ‘big’, is it spending big or buying many players?
“We want of course to have additions to the squad but let’s first keep the structure and the quality of the team we have now and see what we find.
“Let’s not forget that there are many clubs who have big money and maybe there is not enough talent to strengthen all the teams who have money.
“But we’ll be out there [in the transfer market] in a very proactive way."
So what should we make of Wenger's comments?
Clearly they are very good news for Arsenal fans, and can be taken as fact that for the first time in a number of seasons Arsenal are on the front foot when it comes to the summer transfer window.
They are not on the defensive, trying to stop rivals - usually unsuccessfully - from poaching their best players, with Fabregas and Van Persie among those to depart in recent seasons.
Arsenal can be aggressive and try to steal a march on their rivals. As Gary Neville said in the Sky Sports studio, Arsenal will need to act early to beat their competitors to the relatively small collection of top class available players.
These are expect to include Stevan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain, two top stars who Arsenal are battling to sign.
With a Champions League place secured, the uncertainty in the minds of any of their transfer targets will have ended. Expect from Wenger's words, at least two major additions to be with the club by time pre-season resumes in July.
When will Arsenal make their first major signing and who will it be?
