Chelsea are fortunate to have to of the finest goalkeepers in Europe this season on their books, but who has had the better year, and is there a chance Courtois could displace Cech at Stamford Bridge?
Petr Cech’s brilliance between the sticks for Chelsea has perhaps become so commonplace that it is largely overlooked, but there is no doubt that the Czech keeper is amongst the best in Europe at his position. However the fantastic year that Thibaut Courtois has had on loan for Atletico Madrid has not only marked him out as perhaps the most promising keeper around, but even led to suggestions he could seriously rival Cech for a starting place at Chelsea.
Getting statistics on keeper’s performances is generally harder than for outfield players, but Squawka sports have some interesting categories that can give a direct comparison between Cech and Courtois, and the results are perhaps a little surprising. There are always other factors to consider when looking a keeper’s stats, but there are some notable figures that suggest Courtois is a serious challenger to Cech already.
In terms of the basic stats, both Cech and Courtois have played 35 times in their domestic leagues this season, and with 19, the young Belgian has kept five more clean sheets than Chelsea’s keeper.
Courtois has also made more saves per games than Cech, with 1.89 compared to 1.74, and also has a better claim success rate, with his faultless 100% beating the Czech keeper’s 97%.
Both sides are set to finish third this season, and although there might be plenty of qualifying factors, such as Chelsea’s persistent rotation of their central defenders, Courtois’ performance cannot be ignored.
So far nothing has been decided about where the Belgian will play next season, with Chelsea’s new manager, whoever it might be, likely to want a say in what keepers are available to him. If Jose Mourinho does make his expected return to Stamford Bridge, it could count in Courtois’ favour, as not only has the Portuguese manager seen his exploits first hand in Spain this season, he has also shown that he is prepared to oust legendary keepers from his sides by dropping Iker Casillas at Real Madrid.
