Manchester United players have voted Michael Carrick as their player of the season and fingers crossed that Robin Van Persie is big enough to take the disappointment on the chin.
Carrick has had arguably his best season in a Manchester United, holding together the midfield which has been described as the weakest area of the current United first team.
It’s an award that plenty of people will say he fully deserves, having been in for plenty of criticism since falling back after an impressive debut season in 2007-08.
Van Persie’s goals have played a big part in United’s title victory, especially early in the season when he was scoring goals in tight games which turned near defeats into draws and tight draws into narrow wins.
All great players at big football clubs have egos and the Dutchman will not be any different. They need an egotistical side to help them cope with the pressures and demands of playing football at the highest level.
Big characters are common in dressing rooms but it’s now up to every single experienced player at United to ensure that Van Persie doesn’t have a problem with this decision by his teammates. As a senior player, in his first season at the club, we're sure won't give the decision too much worry.
If anything, it will give him further incentive to go and wow with his performances next season to make sure he does win it in 2013/14.
He’s worked as hard as anyone this season scoring a staggering 25 goals in 37 Premier League games, but even that is a tally you would not rule out him exceeding next season.
In terms of the signings which were made last summer, he’s had the biggest impact out of any group of players who moved to a new club.
However, it’s the point that Carrick has carried the midfield which seems to be why he was voted player of the year over Van Persie. The fact the players voted for the midfielder tells you everything about the high regard the Englishman is held in around the club.
Was it the right choice? Well the players should know, but we'd love to hear your opinions...
