A round-up of news and views relating to Newcastle United.
Yohan Cabaye has backed Newcastle United to improve drastically next season after a disappointing year saw them only secure their place in the top flight last weekend. Cabaye believes the squad will take lessons from their struggles this year:
“We know we are capable of much better. We have a good team. I am sure everyone feels the same, but we have to learn from this season to make sure next season is better."
Hatem Ben Arfa has also said that the Magpies will do better next season, and suggested that once their new players have settled and everyone is fit, Newcastle have enough talented individuals to do very well in the Premier League.
Newcastle still have one game left this term, and whilst they are safe themselves it is a crucial match in the race for fourth place. Jack Wilshere is likely to come in for the injured Mikel Arteta at St James’ Park ,with Arsenal needing a win to guarantee they beat Tottenham Hotspur to the last Champions League place.
SportsDirect News have apologised for publishing a story suggesting Newcastle United had begun discussions about a possible move for Wayne Rooney this summer. The England striker is set to leave Manchester United, but links with Newcastle have now been retracted as without merit.
Ryan Taylor has gone to the USA for surgery on his knee that he hopes will save his career. Taylor missed all but two games of this season for Newcastle, and is likely to miss most of next season after undergoing the surgery in Denver.
Newcastle have unveiled their controversial new third kit for next season, which will bear the logo of club sponsor Wonga. The deal with the loan company prompted criticism when it was announced, and there might be objections from the club’s Muslim players including Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa to wearing the shirt.
Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a move for Papiss Cisse as a replacement for Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who could leave the German club this summer. The Champions League finalists might sell Lewandowski as his contract expires in 2014, with Cisse one of several possible targets to replace the Pole.
Newcastle are allegedly set to battle with Southampton for 23 year Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate. The Senegal international has also been linked with Arsenal in the past, and is rated at around £5million.
