Why Spurs fans should be hoping Ancelotti stays at PSG

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has made an astonishing claim should Carlo Ancelotti take over as the new manager.

Gianluca Di Marzio, the journalist that first broke the Pep Guardiola to Bayern Munich story in Spain, has claimed that Florentino Perez has promised to buy Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur if Carlo Ancelotti becomes the club’s new boss.

People rubbished that story at the time but it eventually happened and Bayern are quickly becoming one of the most feared teams in European football.

It would put an end to two parallel rumours, one having run for a very long time and the other being much more contemporary.

The apparent interest from Real Madrid in signing the Welshman from White Hart Lane has been apparent ever since he started affecting big games for his club this season.

The rumours suggesting Carlo Ancelotti will leave Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid are more recent, with the French club blocking any approach from the Spanish side to take to their manager.

Spurs fans had better hope that PSG maintain that hard stance because the last time Perez promised to buy anyone, Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United.

It’s hard to judge whether it’s a PR thing on the part of Perez with the presidential elections at the club just around the corner, or whether he does fully intend to table a big offer for Bale if Ancelotti agrees to coach the side.

It would be a bizarre decision on the part of the former Chelsea manager considering his current popularity, role and success at PSG which may not be something he’d have at Real Madrid.

Of course it’s a higher profile job but it’s also much more difficult in terms of pressure and Jose Mourinho has shown that you can’t have a sustainable career at the club if you’re not well liked by the fans.

A recent poll held by a Spanish newspaper showed that nearly all Real Madrid supporters want the club to sign Gareth Bale over Neymar of Santos, so the public pressure is building if Perez is going to put his money where his mouth is.

The only saving grace for Tottenham Hotspur fans comes in the form of Daniel Levy, who you can bet your mortgage on, who will make it as difficult as possible for Real to complete any sort of deal for the winger/forward.

He’d certainly hold out for a monster of a fee, which could get close to the £80 million Real Madrid paid in that original deal for Ronaldo.

It seems like a bit of an insult to Ancelotti to be honest because he’s a good enough coach to go to Real Madrid, make his own signings and build a team capable of challenging for the La Liga and Champions League titles.

For Tottenham’s sake, let’s hope he and PSG see it that way too.

What do you make of Perez’s apparent claims?
