Westwood was one of the lower league signings made by Paul Lambert last summer and he arrived at Villa Park from the famous Crewe Alexandra youth system.
It’s been a mixed season for him which has seen him make 29 Premier League appearances with six assists, but he is yet to notch up his first league goal for Villa.
Villa have used plenty of new players this season who have all come from similar positions due to the lack of funds at the club, meaning a greater emphasis on drafting in from the lower leagues.
The reason Westwood seems to have been voted the player of next season, before a game has even been played, seems to be the running theme that he has the complete all round game a midfielder needs.
That’s everything from the simple way he uses possession all the way through to how he reads the game defensively to make interceptions and to get into better positions to make tackles.
It’s an interesting insight to the views of Villa fans all over the country who have been made to endure one of their worst seasons in the recent past.
Now that the club’s Premier League status has been confirmed, it allows the fans and the club to look forward to ensure that they never find themselves battling away near the bottom three ever again.
Westwood is also a very young man at 23-years-old so he’s been thrown into the deep end of his Premier League career and tasked with trying to keep his head above water.
The only possible criticism of his game this season is the fact he’s not scored a goal. If he can become a midfielder along the same lines of Frank Lampard, adding a threat going forward then that will really drive his game forward.
That shouldn’t be taken as a criticism of his creativity and unselfishness because he’ll always slot a neat little pass into someone in a better position than try to score a goal himself.
The fact he’s being talked about as the player to watch ahead of someone like Christian Benteke speaks volumes for the impact he’s had and many people will forget this is just his first season in the top flight.
If he just does the basics well in terms of his game and adds to that positive things like work ethic, passion and determination then he could very quickly become more of a fan favourite than he already is.
Aston Villa have lost one great midfielder this season in the form of Stiliyan Petrov who retires, but Westwood certainly has the potential to become as popular and important to the team as Stan ever was.
Do you agree that Westwood will be the stand out player at Villa Park next season?
