His late season performances and eclipsing of Chelsea's all-time goals record mark made Frank Lampard impossible to ignore.
No more could Roman Abramovich brush aside the fact the midfielder had not been offered a new deal, for it was a daily topic of conversation among supporters.
He has also saved his next manager a headache of trying to 'replace' Lampard in the transfer market this summer, and adding extra pressure on any player who is to come in.
As to who that new manager may be, remains a mystery - officially at least.
For it seems to be football's worst kept secret that former manager Jose Mourinho will re-take the reins this summer, once the financial side of his Real Madrid departure is negotiated.
Lampard was a key player in Mourinho's title winning sides, and to see the midfielder depart - against fan wishes, would have made little sense for the 'Special One.'
It is believed Lampard is among the Chelsea players still in touch with his former boss, with John Terry recently admitting they all communicate with Mourinho with regularity.
So the fact there has been a sudden u-turn with regard to Lampard is likely to be a reflection of the incoming manager's wishes, that he is required to stay on next season.
It tells us that Chelsea are nearing their appointment, for plans for next season are speeding up, and it's likely a helping hand from behind the scenes from Mourinho, a word in Abramovich's ear, forced the issue.
We may find out in time whether this is in fact the case, for now we can only speculate, but Lampard's welcome contract renewal certainly lends credence to the rumours that Jose in on his way back.
