Could a David Villa to Tottenham move really be on the cards?
Tottenham's interest in Spanish striker David Villa was reported a week ago, with the club believed to have lodged a bid for his services.
Now developments are said to have taken a further step with fresh reports in Spain stating that Andre Villas-Boas has convinced the Barcelona striker to join. '
The story originates from Spanish radio station Cadena Ser - Which state: "David Villa, in the absence of small details, will play next season at Tottenham, whose manager has seduced the Asturian striker to play there next year."
This all comes in a week where securing Champions League football appears less than likely, if not impossible, but rivals Arsenal must slip up against Newcastle for it to become reality.
The signing of Spain's all-time leading scorer, at a believed fee of £12 million, would at least be a one-up on the Gunners who tried to sign him in January but were unsuccessful with Barcelona unwilling to let him leave while their Champions League campaign was ongoing.
But given the way they were defeated 7-0 on aggregate to Bayern Munich a clearout is on the cards and 31-year-old Villa is one of the high profile names being ushered towards the exit door.
While the reports are certainly encouraging, Spurs do have rivals for his signature and a deal is not done yet, with Atletico Madrid also frontrunners.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas made a trip to Spain a fortnight ago where he visited Barcelona and it was believed it was to focus on academy prospects including Sergi Roberto, but it could have been that his mission was Villa all along, with the reports claiming the AVB has been a key figure in negotiations.
As we always say, don't get too ahead and take it as gospel, wait for official announcements and even until the player is pictured wearing the shirt.
But for Spurs fans, the reports are seriously encouraging as a striker of Villa's calibre is exactly what the club need.
Do you think a deal can happen?
