It relies on the Dutchman because Fabregas will take a lot of persuasion to come back to the Premier League and sign for any other side than Arsenal, especially one of the club’s main rivals.
Fabregas has been a well used player for Barcelona since he joined the club, but he’s failed to have the impact on the side which has seen him surpass midfield legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
That’s created a lot of speculation that he could be on his way back to England with former club Arsenal, but more notably United, trying to tie him down on a long term deal.
United need a high profile midfielder to enhance and improve their squad, as David Moyes mulls over his options heading into the summer transfer market.
He would improve the current side considerably because when Shinji Kagawa has been forced to play out on the left, United have really missed that influential player on the ball through the middle of the team.
Fabregas would certainly nail down a starting place at a David Moyes Manchester United because other than Michael Carrick, it’s difficult to see any other player in the current squad who could currently keep him out of the team.
It rests on Van Persie because of his days with Arsenal and the friendship he forged with Fabregas during that period with the club.
Van Persie is in a perfect position to talk to and convince Fabregas over this move because he found himself in a similar position last season, debating over whether to join one of Arsenal’s main rivals.
Fabregas needs to do what is right for him and his career and that could mean signing at Old Trafford, regardless of his Arsenal past.
He will want to become one of Spain’s primary central midfielders which is something he may not be able to do if he can’t get the better of the other talent at Barcelona on a weekly basis.
He will have the added virtue of responsibility at United because he would become arguably the highest profile midfielder in that side if Moyes managed to get the club to put the deal together.
This looks as though it’s going to rumble on for a few more weeks because Fabregas threw cold water over recent questions on a return to Arsenal, but he may not see them as having a direct shot at any silverware.
Manchester United is a completely different story and Van Persie can help to make that happen.
Do you think Cesc will head to Old Trafford?
