Brendan Rodgers' plans to boost Liverpool's identity taking shape

The best decision Brendan Rodgers makes as Liverpool boss this summer may have nothing to do with his playing squad.

Rodgers has expressed a desire to see more Liverpool legends in various roles around the club, which could have a very positive knock on effect to both his players and the club’s supporters.

Rodgers wants to increase the presence of various legends making appearances at various events as well as in possible ambassadorial roles, representing the club in the current generation.

Two time manager Kenny Dalglish, former striker Robbie Fowler and Kop legend Jan Molby, who writes several newspaper columns in the area, have all been mentioned as possible figures in this grand plan.

Any move like this has three obvious benefits which could help the club moving forward into next season and beyond.

Firstly, it’s not going to cost the club anything because all of these various requests to popular Liverpool figures are based on their own sense of decency and desire to see the club grow and strengthen.

It has the ability to create passion and stir up positive feeling around the club, which is something that can rub off on the fans in a big way.

Anfield is one of the most intimidating grounds in England for any visiting side to go to and when the stadium is rocking, it can have the effect of helping the players to raise their game for the occasion.

Creating a stronger identity with what Rodgers is trying to achieve is also very important.

The presence of legends and former players in various roles, helps to enhance the feeling of respect for Rodgers from the older generation of fans as well as retaining a positive identity with younger supporters.

If kids growing up around Merseyside don’t know about the heritage of the club and don’t understand Liverpool, they can’t possibly forge a strong relationship with the current crop of players.

That identity is also very important in terms of the youngsters coming up through the Under-21 ranks.

Liverpool have one of the best Development Squads in the country and if they are being constantly reminded of Liverpool’s past through the appearance of certain individuals, that can go a long way to helping them protect their future.

Rodgers is trying to create a respectable and sustainable football club, which can become the envy of plenty of other sides around the country and this is a very savvy and shrewd way of going about it.

Which Liverpool legends do you want to see helping out? Is Rodgers wasting his time?
