Newcastle ‘preparing shock bid’ for Rooney. I pick up my reading glasses that have slid off my slack-jawed face and try in vein to shake the astonishment from my cheeks. I clear up the orange juice that just spewed all over my laptop from my mouth and nose as I choked in shock. I rub my eyes double-take and double-take again; I quadruple take.
Newcastle are after Wayne Rooney.
It brought back memories to my reaction when I read that ‘Arsenal were after want-away Casillas’. Despite anyone who knows anything about Spanish football realising that Casillas is a Madridista to his very bones and would only leave if Jose Mourinho were to stay; something it is quite clear is not going to happen.
That ludicrous rumour really ‘grinded my gears’ in the words of Peter Griffin; but this one has just made me belly laugh with disbelief.
Of course this is a deal that is never going to go through.
The immediate response from many is that this is an absurd publicity stunt from Mike Ashley and when you consider that the potential negotiations were originally announced on the company Sports Direct’s official website you have to agree that this is certainly a far-fetched PR fantasy. Considering I am currently writing about it you may also suggest it has been a largely successful one.
Some news sources however really have run with this story as if there is a real possibility of it coming to fruition.
Sure Rooney almost signed for Newcastle back in 2004 but that was as a fresh-faced teen who had the chance of working with the legendary Sir Bobby Robson. Not a regarded international superstar who would be signing for an out-of-form side to play under a manager who just had his one good year in the Premier League.
So in terms of ridiculous transfer rumours this has to be the worst of the summer yet; even if it did start as a mere PR stunt there is no doubt that it has now become a genuine story that you will hear people talking about if you are going to watch the Europa League final in a public house this evening.
Arsenal’s move for Casillas has been trumped; by Newcastle’s negotiations with Rooney but I must dash; got a lead on Lionel Messi signing for Accrington Stanley.
What is the most ridiculous transfer rumour you remember?
