A poll conducted by a Spanish newspaper showed that nearly all Real Madrid supporters urged the club to sign Gareth Bale.
The poll was run by Spanish newspaper AS, which produced reports showing 93 per cent of Real Madrid fans who took part want the club to sign Gareth Bale over seven per cent favouring Santos’ Neymar.
Bale has been having his best season with Tottenham Hotspur, which has led to plenty of praise and growing speculation that he could be heading off to the Spanish capital in a big money deal this summer.
It seems to be an impact thing because Neymar has also been linked with a very high profile move to La Liga, but Bale seems to have more of a direct effect in terms of shaping the outcomes of games.
He’s scored 20 goals in the Premier League this season and quite a high percentage of those goals have come in situations where Bale has converted chances that have secured vital points for the club e.g. West Ham United away.
Neymar certainly has a higher strike rate but you’d expect that from such a talented striker over Bale, who occasionally plays in the centre of midfield and out on the left wing.
This sort of thing in relation to Real Madrid is not uncommon because the presidential elections at the club often trigger polls which give the candidates the right sort of ideas over what fans are looking for.
Florentino Perez said in 2009 that he would sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United if he was elected and the club did just that. Fingers crossed he doesn’t make the same statements with regards to Bale.
Don’t panic too much Tottenham supporters because if someone promises to buy Bale as president of the club, it wouldn’t be the first time someone has failed to make good on various promises just to get into a position of power.
It’s all way too hypothetical at the moment because there has been no indication from Bale that he wants to leave the club or London having just started a very young family in the English capital.
This is probably one of the first and only official links which suggests there would be much love in Spain if Real Madrid went after the Spurs forward.
Spurs’ position in the top four is only going to be part of the story because Bale genuinely doesn’t look like he is going to jump ship any time soon.
Similarly to Ronaldo when he was at United, he could well choose to give the club another season before he fully commits to engineering a move away from White Hart Lane and starting a new adventure.
The strength of the indication from Real Madrid fans is what should worry Tottenham supporters the most because it’s a giveaway sign that Madrid fans are well aware of the links to the Tottenham man and the possibility of signing him.
Madrid have the resources to draw on if they wanted to go after him and if the fan pressure continues to increase, it could only be a matter of time before an official enquiry is on the table.
What do you make of the poll stats?
