Manchester United could benefit from Porto’s dramatic win against Benfica over the weekend.
FC Porto scored a dramatic last minute goal against Benfica in the latest round of Portuguese league fixtures, which has helped them overtake their rivals and move one step closer to the league title.
Benfica have been battling away against Porto near the top of the league for most of the season and concession of the title could force them into a big summer clearout.
That could very much work in the favour of a David Moyes Manchester United because it would provide them with the chance to pick up two key players they have been constantly linked with; Ezequiel Garay and Nemanja Matic.
Garay is a player who has been linked with United for most of the season, with some Portuguese media sources even claiming earlier in the season that a £20 million deal had already been secured for him.
Matic is a more interesting one considering he failed to make the grade at Chelsea, has been one of Benfica’s most consistent players and is now rated by the club within the £30 million bracket.
There is little doubt that both players could play a significant role in the current group of United players and if the disappointment of potentially losing the title to Porto causes the axe to fall, United should pounce.
However, they should only pounce if David Moyes feels as though he can get good value out of the transfers which is where the experience of his Everton days are going to come into the equation.
Benfica could be so heartbroken that they want to do a complete re-build, which means United could get these targets on the cheap.
If there is a clear urgency from Benfica in terms of getting players out and replacing them, then United have more grounds to play hard ball over the price which means it should come down if Benfica want to offload these players.
You may well question the logic behind axing certain members of the squad but Benfica are a side desperately trying to topple Porto and they won’t want players in their squad with one eye on a move away.
If they feel Garay and Matic are already thinking about moving onto a bigger side then they could easily just get rid of them, in place of other players who are fully committed to the Benfica cause.
Of course we won’t know how much truth there is in the original rumours now that Sir Alex Ferguson is retiring unless Moyes sees either as the ideal player to pull in at short notice.
Don’t expect Moyes to shell out £50 million for this pair, especially considering the reserves United already have but if it turned out to be £30 million for the pair then it’s a different story.
Can you see either at Old Trafford next season?
