Manchester City weekend round-up: Including FA Cup reaction and Mancini’s future

Manuel Pellegrini

All the news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad this weekend…

It has been the weekend to forget for Manchester City fans, following their shock 1-0 defeat to Wigan in the FA Cup final.

The only goal of the game came after City’s Pablo Zabaleta had been sent off for two yellow card offences.

A Ben Watson header deep into injury time gave the relegation-threatened team the cup and almost certainly ensured Roberto Mancini his P45.

Rumours were circulating prior to the match that Mancini was unlikely to be in charge at the Etihad next season, with Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini the likely candidate to replace him. They were rumours the Chilean did little to dispel in an interview prior to his side’s La Liga match against Sevilla.

Talking of Malaga’s financial issues, he said, “I don’t think any of us really want to leave Malaga. Everyone would prefer to stay, but unfortunately the circumstances we are in don’t allow that.”

Previously linked with the manager’s position at Chelsea, it now seems Pellegrini is heading to another team in blue. Not that Mancini is of the same belief.

Following Saturday’s defeat the Italian emphatically dismissed the reports.

If I said it’s rubbish, it’s rubbish,” he said, “speculation and rubbish.”

He also criticised his club for not dismissing rumours that have been circulating for some time.

I don’t know why the club didn’t stop this because I don’t think it’s true.”

But there seem to be plenty of people who do believe it, as reports in Spain suggest Pellegrini already has a deal in place to arrive in the summer.

Some reports even go so far as to suggest Mancini will be dismissed before City’s next game, against Reading on Tuesday evening; although surely that would only transpire if Mancini walks before being pushed.

It now seems almost certain that the top three in the Premier League this season will all have new managers in place for the next campaign.

While so much of the last 48 hours has been taken up with FA Cup reaction and managerial speculation, there has still been time for a transfer rumour to break through.

The latest sees City linked with Roma’s Miralem Pjanic. The 23-year-old midfielder is also reportedly on the radars of both Arsenal and Tottenham, and is said to be valued at close to £25million.
