Liverpool weekend round-up: Including Fulham reaction and Downing future

All the news, views and transfer rumours from Anfield this weekend…

Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday. After Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side ahead, Daniel Sturridge bagged the first hat-trick of his professional career with goals in the 36th, 62nd and 85th minutes.

Martin Jol’s side were fuming after not being awarded a penalty for a Lucas handball with the scores at 1-1. The Reds almost immediately scored their second after Philippe Coutinho slipped when shooting only for Sturridge to find the net.

The striker’s performance prompted praise from manager Brendan Rodgers after the game.

He’s a great talent and I think he will prove if he stays fit and plays games to be one of the top strikers in the Premier League in the next few years.”

It was yet another great display of attacking football away from home in a season full of them. Rodgers will now be hoping they can transfer that flare to all their performances. If they are able to, next season could be an exciting one for the Anfield faithful.

A player very much hoping to be a part of that is Stewart Downing, who has had a mixed season under Rodgers.

After initially being told he could leave the club in January, he is now playing regularly and hopes to stay at Anfield beyond this summer.

There have been some positive signs and personally I’d like to stay,” Downing said, “but that is the manager’s decision.”

As one player seeks to stay at Liverpool, another may soon be joining him. Reports suggest the Reds are considering a move for 19-year-old Lille left-back Lucas Digne.

Rated at £8million, Digne’s signing would suggest he is seen as a long-term replacement for current left-back Jose Enrique.

Although fans keen to see the continual development of Andre Wisdom may have something to say about that.
