News and gossip from the past 48 hours at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham Hotspur beat Stoke City today in a dramatic match at the Britannia Stadium. Their Champions League place seemed in tatters early on when a Steven N’Zonzi header gave them an early lead. However Clint Dempsey scored an excellent improvised goal into an empty net when Asmir Begovic fluffed his lines. However it was the reinvigorated Emmanuel Adebayor who grabbed the winner five minutes from time to leapfrog Arsenal into fourth place.
Tottenham want to snap up Christian Benteke on a £20 million deal this summer. The Belgian international has been in sensational form in 2013 for Aston Villa and has played a vital role in consolidating their standing as a Premier League outfit. Arsenal are also said to be keen on the 22-year-old.
Spurs are also planning a raid on Wigan Athletic for sought after Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy. The 22-year-old has been in great form for The Lactics this season but with the club seemingly struggling to survive in the Premier League he may prove the perfect solution to their midfield problems. Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be keen.
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is reportedly ready to try lure Jermain Defoe back to his old club this summer. Defoe is not reportedly in the long-term plans of Andre Villas-Boas and with striking options at a premium at Upton Park next season Defoe would be a perfect addition.
Franco Baldini may consider taking up a role as head of recruitment at Spurs. The former England assistant is currently working with AS Roma in a similar capacity but Spurs want to bring him back to London. Baldini and AVB reportedly have a good working relationship and Daniel Levy is happy for the plan to go ahead.
