Early reports are emanating that the Italian will be replaced with Manuel Pellegrini and not finish the season with his club.
It is being widely reported that Roberto Mancini will be sacked possibly as early as before the game with Reading on Tuesday night. The Italian’s position in charge at The Etihad has been in question all season but came under severe scrutiny before the FA Cup Final when it was revealed that City officials had met with Chilean Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini.
After the game he went on record to vent his frustration at the decision of club officials not to break their silence over his future; and that appears to have been the straw to break the camel’s back for Mancini’s City reign.
He led the club to the Premier League title for the first time in their history last year in dramatic circumstances but it is not only due to his lack of silverware this season that he has been reportedly sent on his way but instead a combination of that and a degree of dissatisfaction in the way his relationship with club officials has broken down.
“You (the media) continue to speak about this for six months and there has been too much in the last two weeks. I don’t know why the club hasn’t stopped this because it is not correct and I don’t think it is true. It is rubbish this speculation. I will still be here next season. It is rubbish, but I know football and know that everything can happen. But if it is true, we will know in the next two weeks. If it isn’t, this is stupid (speculation). If it is true, then I am stupid for not believing this. Maybe next Sunday, when the season is finished, we will know then.”
It is not yet clear how the decision will affect the club going forward this season but the general consensus is once a severance package is agreed the Italian will be left without a job; as stated by the Daily Mail's Northern correspondent Ian Ladyman on Twitter:
Roberto Mancini to be sacked by Man City once severance deal has been confirmed. Manuel Pellegrini to replace him. bit.ly/S8lQj4— Ian Ladyman (@Ian_Ladyman_DM) May 12, 2013
While the belief that he was on his way out of the club was shared by most in the know it still comes as a surprise to see him reportedly sacked with just a few games left in the season.
With that news came the sing-song at Old Trafford of 'We won our trophy back, and now you've got the sack'. Now it seems he will never have the chance to win back that trophy with Manchester City.
City fans what do you think about Mancini's exit?
