It is not only new managers that have been linked with Manchester City in recent days. Romanian defender Stefan Radu is reportedly also high on their wanted list.
The fullback currently plays for Italian side Lazio, who according to the player’s agent may be pricing him out of a deal.
Despite playing predominantly as a left-back for the last two seasons, Radu can also play in the centre, which may appeal to a side seeking back-up for their first choice centre-back pairing of Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic.
Radu has made 31 appearances for Lazio this season, scoring twice and providing two assists. His disciplinary record is also excellent, with only 5 yellow cards and no dismissals all season.
While his passing ability is particularly strong; something that would suit the ethos of the Etihad.
Referring to the apparent interest, agent Victor Becali said, “The boy is very much appreciated by the manager and the staff. The idea is to have him play in the centre of the defence, next to Nastasic.”
Perhaps in the long term, but it is impossible to see Radu ousting Kompany from a starting position.
With Lazio asking for around €17million for his services, and with rumours continuing about Roberto Mancini’s future, Radu’s move is far from certain.
But at the same time it is one that makes significant sense for a side seeking to reinforce in all areas of the field.
With the likely departure of one if not both of Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure, it is almost certain that City will bring in at least one new defender this summer.
They would do far worse than Radu, who has excelled since moving to Lazio from Dinamo Bucharest, first on loan and then in a permanent deal that has seen him make over 100 appearances for the Serie A side.
Could Radu be a success at City? Or which other defenders would you target instead of the Romanian?
