David Moyes will take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of this season after the legendary Manchester United manager announced his retirement from the role in the week. It was reported that Moyes was always the number one target to replace Sir Alex at the Theatre of Dreams.
However according to reports in Portugal that is not exactly true. The publication Record believe that Jose Mourinho was the man originally offered the chance to step into these rather daunting shoes but with a Chelsea deal lined up he could not take on the position as he was all ready to settle back into London life.
This would be a direct contradiction to what we believe over here that Moyes was always the preferred option so this will be unwelcome news for United and the current Everton gaffer.
However; Manchester United fans can be afforded taking reports from this source with a pinch of salt after their reports in March about Ezequiel Garay.
The Argentine centre back has been in good form for the Portuguese outfit this year and was being heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford for most of the year. But Record went one step further and, excuse the pun, went on the record over the future of the 26-year-old defender.
They said that a €20 million deal was complete for the former Real Madrid star; but so far no such confirmation has been dealt from United’s end.
The speculation has also cooled in recent times so this deal is certainly not sas wrapped up as they one stated.
Therefore Manchester United fans can be forgiven if they do not take this report to seriously and just hope the new man can live up to some rather large expectations and boots to fill. Unwelcome reports from Portugal are clearly not helpful.
