Wayne Rooney and Arsenal could do a lot worse than each other

A report has linked Manchester United's wantaway striker Wayne Rooney with Arsenal. Amit Acharya writes why it may not be such a bad idea.

The season has not yet finished but the transfer stories are already building, some of the names being linked with Premier League moves are Rooney, Fabregas, Villa, Remy, Ronaldo and Jovetic.

These are just a few of the potential summer sagas but there is one story that stands out for me, that is the rumour linking Wayne Rooney to Chelsea.

It had been reported in some papers the day before the Chelsea rumours appeared that Wayne Rooney had told his teammates at Manchester United that he was leaving to join Bayern Munich. It is unclear if Man Utd will actually let Rooney leave this summer or what club he will actually go to, but it seems pretty clear that he wants to leave.

The Chelsea story in the press states that if Rooney had a choice he would stay in England. The two English clubs that his name would naturally be linked to are Chelsea and Manchester City.

In my opinion Arsenal should also go in for him. There seems to be money coming into the club in the shape of a new kit sponsor, as well as money from other sources. The only doubt I have with such a transfer is Arsenal’s board and Wengers willingness to sanction any such transfer.

Arsenal are short of match winners, especially in the form of a striker. Wayne Rooney could easily plug this gap, a signing like this could be the difference between challenging for the top four to challenging for the league.

A possible reason for Rooney to leave Man Utd is that he wants to play as the main striker and wants to be the main player of the team. If he were to join Chelsea his ego would have to potentially compete with Falcao as well as Mourinho’s ego.

I see him to be a very similar player to Aguero and Tevez at Manchester City, this would also be the most controversial move he could make. Therefore I doubt he will be moving across Manchester. This all probably means he will go abroad, but if he were to stay on these shores Arsenal could be his best option.

Most Arsenal fans want to see big name signings, but most would be against such a move as he is so intrinsically to Manchester United, he is also the player who ended the run of the ‘invincibles’ by what looked to be a dive.

Yet Robin Van Persie made the move the other way last season and it has worked out pretty well. The fans have taken to him and he has been the difference that split the Manchester clubs in the league.

The same would apply to Rooney and Arsenal, the fans would change their opinion of him. If Arsenal were to get into the top four, a signing like Rooney could also re-establish Arsenal’s dominance over Tottenham seeing as Gareth Bale will most likely leave if they don’t get into the Champions League.

Could you imagine Rooney, Wilshere and Cazorla playing in the same side? This is something that as an Arsenal fan I would love to see, but I doubt it will materialise.

If not Wayne Rooney then Arsenal should really go for a marquee player to challenge for trophies again, something they seem to have forgotten.
