Arsenal fans if you have never heard of a Ukrainian lad called Oleksandr Yakovenko you can read up on him later; the important thing is what the latest step in his career path may mean for Arsenal FC.
The Ukrainian forward has been something of a journeyman but after a great campaign with OH Leuven last term he has returned from his loan spell and become a regular at the Brussels club Anderlecht this season. He has played 37 games and scored nine times in 2012-13 and is a versatile front-man capable of playing anywhere across the front-line.
In regards to playing style he is somewhat similar to Arsenal transfer target Stevan Jovetic; which is good news because Yakovenko appears to be on his way to Fiorentina.
The Belgian outfits sporting director Herman Van Holsbeeck seemed resigned to Yakovenko’s impending move to Florence in an interview with Flemish paper Het Laatse Nieuws this morning when he stated:
“No, I do not regret the departure of Yakovenko. If a player gets an offer from top level club, you have to leave.”
He will reportedly move to the Artemio Franchi on a free transfer this summer and with Giuseppe Rossi’s return to fitness also like a new signing it would appear that La Viola have brought in the reinforcements for Montenegrin forward Stevan Jovetic already; leaving the door well and truly open for Arsenal to complete a deal for a player widely believed to be their number one target.
While Fiorentina have so far failed to confirm the Yakovenko transfer it would be bizarre for his own clubs sporting director to announce his departure prematurely so reading between the lines informs you that a deal is more than likely imminent.
So, are Arsenal now clear to snap up their most wanted?
Do you think Yakovenko is Jovetic’s replacement?
