Hummels’ comments point to Dortmund stay

Having expressed his shock at Mario Gotze's departure, has Mats Hummels revealed that he is staying at Borussia Dortmund, ending any speculation linking him with Manchester United?

It is no understatement to say that Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels is one of the most wanted defenders in Europe.

But wanting and getting are two very different things. And if recent comments from the 24-year-old are anything to go by, his suitors are going to end this summer disappointed.

Following the announcement that Hummels’ teammate Mario Gotze will shortly be joining Bayern Munich, the German centre-back has expressed his shock and disappointment.

I almost did not sleep the night I got to know about this,” he said in reference to Gotze’s imminent departure.

That is no surprise. The 20-year-old is one of the brightest prospects in world football and will be a huge loss for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

But what is a surprise is what Hummels went on to say.

When Kagawa left or if Lewandowski moves on I am able to see reasons; because they are not from Germany.”

It is a statement that makes sense. From Japan and Poland respectively, Kagawa and Lewandowski have already moved countries at least once; to do so again is no big deal.

So is Hummels saying that he cannot comprehend leaving the Bundesliga, or that he cannot get his head around a player moving from Dortmund to their biggest rivals?

By referring to Manchester United’s Kagawa, it appears to be the former.

Which somewhat contradicts a statement he made to German newspaper Bild last month.

My father and I would turn down about 99.9 per cent of all the clubs in the world if they approached us,” he said.

However, Barcelona are one out of two or three clubs that could make me consider a summer transfer.”

To consider is not to act, but should Hummels ever get one of those too-good-to-refuse offers, it will be interesting to see what he does.

Should he join Gotze in leaving Dortmund in the future, it won’t be the defender losing sleep, it will be his current manager Klopp.

When a side has excelled, it is no surprise when their brightest components are sought by others.

Hummels has already expressed his sadness at one part moving on. Should he be true to his most recently expressed feelings, he will ensure he doesn’t become another.

Can you see Hummels remaining at Dortmund for the long term?  Or which other clubs could tempt him into a move?
