Report - Sir Alex Ferguson approached Ancelotti about replacing him

A report in Spain has claimed Carlo Ancelotti was approached about becoming Manchester United manager.

In the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, all indications are currently pointing towards Everton's David Moyes as his replacement.

Even on Manchester United's Facebook page they this afternoon announced his appointment, before deleting it, clearly posting it too early.

But it could have been somebody different, a former Chelsea boss no less.

Spanish newspaper El Confidencial are today claiming that Carlo Ancelotti was approached about becoming a candidate for the job.

The newspaper reports that Sir Alex Ferguson traveled into Europe to meet Ancelotti personally to discuss whether he would be prepared to take the reins at Old Trafford.

Ancelotti is a manager who Sir Alex Ferguson has enjoyed many a dual with during his stints at Milan and Juventus prior to his Chelsea job.

Currently the PSG manager, and tipped to take over Real Madrid, it is said that Ancelotti was wanted by Ferguson due to his track record of managing major stars, and success with it.

The newspaper claim Ancelotti was taken aback by Ferguson's approach, but could not take him up on it because he had already given his word to Real Madrid that he would sit down with them at the end of the season to discuss terms, with Mourinho set to depart.
