All of the talk has been about the two Manchester clubs holding the power in English football for the next few years, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement has created a massive opportunity for Chelsea they need to take advantage of.
If David Moyes is confirmed as the new United boss, that would pathe the way for Chelsea to organise a return for Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge, without having to worry about intervention from Old Trafford.
That would be a massive boost for Chelsea because Mourinho has made his love and affection for the club quite clear over the past season, which suggests he’d be happy to settle into a longer spell in charge of the side.
A power shift could take place because Mourinho’s skills have enabled him to guarantee success at every club he’s been to.
He puts trophies into the cabinet and his tactical genius and the way he gets the best out of all his players, would mean Chelsea eradicating the small weaknesses which have been evident in their game this season.
He’d also sort put the farcical situation in relation to the future of Frank Lampard and he may even make that a sticking point, which could influence whether he goes back to Stamford Bridge at all.
The case of Wayne Rooney is also something which could help Chelsea big time, but it’s very debatable whether that’s a move which is ever going to happen.
Chelsea need a striker, that much is clear, and Mourinho has the potential to attract the sort of high profile stars who are currently gracing every other top team around Europe at the moment.
Rooney could certainly do a job at Chelsea up top and he could be tempted into a Mourinho led revolution because his place in the current Chelsea side would be undoubted.
I don’t need to sell his skills, he could score a lot of goals for the current European Champions but United’s reluctance to sell to one of their main rivals could be the sticking point in any deal, but that all depends on who they in turn will want to bring in.
Rooney’s presence in that Chelsea attack would send out a huge sign of intent and it would allow them to create a strong attacking unit with Rooney fitting in nicely alongside the creative midfield players at the club.
Chelsea need to up the ante this summer because they have been off the pace of the two Manchester clubs.
Mourinho would be the first step in getting the power in English football to return to London, as it would not make them physically a better side, it would make them a much more intimidating team to play against.
Rooney would be a superb signing for the club but that depends on so many things which are yet to happen, which don’t take into account the possibility of him moving to Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich. All very interesting.
Can Chelsea wrestle the power back next season?
