There have been a few very suspect transfer rumours in recent months, and Manchester United have been dragged into a couple of them. Namely Ashley Cole being linked with the club, and David de Gea being linked to Chelsea.
Now one which threatens to top the lot has emerged, a link between Manchester United and Pepe.
The claims come from Spanish newspaper AS, in their transfer column written by Manuel Manolete, which also suggests the Red Devils want Angel di Maria.
AS say that Pepe has been identified by United as an attainable top quality centre-back who could 'improve their defence', even willing to pay 30 million Euros.
It's fairly easy to knock this one down, but let's for a moment consider how this one could be plausible.
It's not been a secret that United are in the market for a centre-back this summer, with deals for Ezequiel Garay and Eliaquim Mangala suggested, although the trail on these two has gone cold of late.
Garay himself has been linked with a return to Real Madrid, and this could in turn help push Pepe out, with Raphael Varane the future of the club's defence.
Nemanja Vidic has been suggested as a player who may be leaving the club this summer, with Bayern interested in the 31-year-old club captain, with United keen to cash in given his knee injury problems.
But we can't continue any longer, for surely this is one deal which simply put will not be happening.
Pepe at 30-years-old would not be a good investment for United in defence, especially at the astronomical and extortionate price quoted.
His hot-headed streak has seen him landed with bans the sort of length which Luis Suarez is used to picking up, and in the Premier League he would not fare well.
He is a walking red card waiting to happen, and in the faster paced Premier League he would be a liability for United.
Then there is the fact he is just one year younger than Vidic and a step down in quality and experience in the division, and none of this seems to add up.
The Spanish press do often throw names around in a hat and see what sticks when it comes to players and transfers, and this appears to be just one instance.
Pepe to United? You must be joking.
Is this the most improbable transfer rumour of the summer?
