1. 1824 - Beethoven's 9th Symphony premiers in Vienna

2. 1915 - The British ocean liner Lusitania is sunk by a German submarine in World War I

3. 1934 - The 9.45-inch, 14.1 lb Pearl of Lao Tzu is found by a diver in a giant clam in the Palawan Sea

4. 1945 - Germany signs an unconditional surrender, ending six years of war in Europe

5. 1956 - Sugar Ray Leonard is born

6. 1965 - White voters in Rhodesia overwhelmingly back Prime Minister Ian Smith's Rhodesian Front which will unilaterally declare independence from the UK

7. 1971 - Concorde, the worlds first faster-than-sound passenger plane, took off for a 75 minute publicity flight to Toulouse, carrying the French President on board

8. 2000 - Vladimir Putin is inaugurated as Russia’s President

9. 2001 - Ronnie Biggs, one of the 'Great Train Robbers' who had eluded capture and settled in Brazil following his prison escape in 1965, voluntarily returns to Britain, where he was arrested and jailed to complete the 28 remaining years of his sentence

10. 2006 - Arsenal plays its last game at Highbury - and beat Wigan 4-2

11. 2007 - Queen Elizabeth II meets with President George W. Bush near the end of a visit to the United States
