What made Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen's 'beautiful day' even better?

Ajax have secured the Dutch title; much to the delight of one of their former players.

It has been a pretty successful season for Belgian international Jan Vertonghen. After deciding to reject the offer of a deal at Arsenal in favour of their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The move from Ajax saw the Dutch outfits captain join after being named the Eredivisie and Ajax Player of the Season.

He played for Ajax after moving from Germinal Beerschot Antwerp in 2003 at the tender age of 16 so there is little doubt he was bound to have the club in his heart.

However he has certainly taken his new club to his heart as well. It has been an exceptional campaign for the player and such form saw him rewarded with a place in the team of the season at the PFA Awards last weekend.

But today; obviously enjoying the win over Southampton and the increasingly rare London sunshine the 26-year-old announced one thing that could make the probably smile across his mug grow even further:

For his former club to tie up their 32nd Dutch Championship with a win against Willem II at the Amsterdam Arena; and that is exactly what they did.

Goals from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Christian Eriksen, Viktor Fischer, Siem de Jong and Danny Hoesen sealed a 5-0 thrashing over their relegation threatened rivals who were indeed condemned to Eerste Divisie football next season.

With just one game remaining and perennial rivals PSV Eindhoven four points in arrears Frank der Boer’s side could celebrate after the early morning victory as they continued their stranglehold over Dutch football for another season; and put a smile on the face of one of the Premier League’s most outstanding players this season.
