Chelsea weekend round-up: Including Luiz laugh and Benitez future

Schalke 04

News and gossip from the past 48 hours at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have beaten Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford to stay in the mix for the Champions League places. United rotated their already crowned squad and Chelsea were without Eden Hazard and John Obi Mikel for the game which made for a scrappy and rather poor affair.

However a strike from Juan Mata in the 82nd minute took a horrific deflection off of Phil Jones and beat Anders Lindegaard to give Chelsea a vital 1-0 win. Rafael was sent off late on for kicking David Luiz in an off-the-ball incident.

However many were quick to point out that David Luiz did take something of a theatrical tumble in order to get the full-back sent off. He was also spotted on camera laughing at the incident whilst writhing around in ‘pain’. You can see a picture of the goofy smile here…

David Luiz has however been spreading a little love today. Yossi Benayoun has had a hard time of it recently but it was his 32nd birthday today and David Luiz was quick to offer him a ‘bug hug’ for the occasion.

Former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon believes that the club would find it extremely hard to reject the opportunity to bring ex-gaffer Jose Mourinho back to the club considering his previous success. Mourinho has indicated he may be willing to return to the club in recent interviews by suggesting he will go where he is ‘loved’ this summer.

Schalke 04 are prepared to take Rafa Benitez off of Chelsea’s hands at the end of the season. The Bundesliga outfit are looking for a new manager in the summer and while they have previously been linked with a move for Everton boss David Moyes it is now reported the Spaniard is their new number one choice.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted before today’s fixture with Chelsea that Frank Lampard is on the list of ‘ones that got away’. He says he wanted to sign the midfielder as a youngster when he was at West Ham but Chelsea managed to get there before them. He now regrets not having a player that could have ‘got 200 goals from midfield’.
