Stick or twist? Will RVP decide to wear number nine or stick with number 20 at Manchester United next season?
Robin Van Persie has certainly had an excellent debut season at Old Trafford. Manchester United signed the Dutchman as Sir Alex Ferguson stated that the club would never lose out on the title on goal difference ever again.
Indeed it was his goals that won them the league against Aston Villa last month; his superb hat-trick enough to brush aside their Midlands rivals and open up an unattainable gap from their city rivals Manchester City.
RVP’s first Premier League title was Manchester United’s 13th; and 20th league triumph overall which led many a player to point to the number 20 adorning the shirt of the man himself as a clear omen of the affect he was bound to have this season.
But what will he have on his back next season?
There has been plenty of rumour that he may consider changing his squad number this season to a more conventional number ‘9’. When he first arrived at United that shirt number was occupied by Dimitar Berbatov. But the Bulgarian is now at Fulham meaning that shirt now lies vacant and RVP has the opportunity to wear the number previously worn by the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Andy Cole and Brian McClair.
And he has indeed been offered the shirt; an offer he has politely declined.
As revealed by resident Old Trafford journalist Nick Coppack on Twitter RVP will continue to wear the number ‘20’ shirt next season that has served him so well this campaign.
The revelation comes from the official programme notes ahead of the game with Chelsea tomorrow and here is the Tweet that confirms the news:
Robin van Persie: "I think I'll keep it [the no.20 shirt]. I have the option to take no.9 but I don’t think I’ll do that."— Nick Coppack (@nickcoppack) May 4, 2013
It is nice to also hear he has the fans in mind with his decision to remain with his current shirt choice:
RvP: "I'll stick with what is right and what feels good. Also, I don't want to be harsh to the fans who have no.20 on their kit."— Nick Coppack (@nickcoppack) May 4, 2013
RvP: "I don't want them to have to buy a new shirt. [No.20] has been a good number for me. I'll stick with it."— Nick Coppack (@nickcoppack) May 4, 2013
What do you make of the decision? Should he have switched to number nine?
