Recent reports have linked Slovenian international Josip Ilicic with a move to Liverpool as his Italian side Palermo struggle in a fight against relegation from Serie A.
The tall and dynamic playmaker has been one of the only shining lights for the Sicilian side and his recent strike against Inter Milan was another reminder of just how important he is likely to be in a survival battle:
As you heard in the commentary that was his fifth goal in as many games so he is certainly in form but he has cast his own future into doubt recently:
"I don't know what will occur in June," he told Corriere dello Sport. ‘’The career of a footballer is short and moments arrive when you can change your life…’’
It is these type of comments that are likely to give the Premier League chasers such as Liverpool hope of snapping up the 25-year-old. However he did finish that sentence like so…
‘’Nevertheless, I'd like to remain in Italy."
That may not necessarily represent a problem. Footballers say a lot of things when it comes to transfer season.
But his most recent comment suggests he has a place in his heart for another club entirely which is even more ominous for any Liverpool fans hoping to see the powerful but technically poised midfielder arrive at Anfield:
“I want to continue my scoring run. If I have one ambition, it's to score against Juventus. They are a very strong team and play in a beautiful stadium.’’
If this is not the words of a man trying to secure a dream move I am not entirely sure what is? A move to the Italian champions would certainly suit the player especially if he is keen to stay in Italy.
Liverpool will of course be gutted if they do not get their man because he is not only perfect for the team but is suited to the Premier League physicality to boot.
Regardless of where he ends up next season we should all keep our fingers on the pulse of this talented midfielder’s career.
Would you like to see Josip Illicic at Anfield?
