It is being reported in the Spanish and German media today that after Borussia Dortmund managed to head off the rally of Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid at The Bernabeu the Spanish sides president invited a big name into an office at the Madrid stadium in order to discuss his future; that player was Robert Lewandowski.
Impressed with the player after he bagged all four goals for Die Schwarzgelben in the first leg of the tie in Germany Florentino Perez apparently spoke with the 24-year-old; although the subject matter was not disclosed.
It is also suggested that Perez met with a Borussia Dortmund representative; although that is not uncommon in post-match ritual.
Jose Mourinho was also keen to embrace the Pole after the game but he may have differing motives; with reports he is his number one target should he return to Chelsea this summer.
But all of this reminds me of another player who stole the show in a Champions League semi-final back in 2011.
That was of course German international Manuel Neuer starring for Schalke 04 against Manchester United. After that game Sir Alex Ferguson was keen to embrace the starlet and with Edwin Van Der Sar retiring that summer all of a sudden Neuer was the number one player linked with taking on the mantle of number one at Old Trafford.
But that is not where the similarities in this case end.
For Neuer, like Lewandowski, was being simultaneously courted by Germany’s biggest club FC Bayern Munchen.
Bayern were after a new goalkeeper to replace the ageing Hans Jorg-Butt at the Allianz Arena.
In the end Bayern got their man making him the second most expensive goalkeeper of all time and Manchester United instead turned their attentions to current incumbent David De Gea.
Now the story is much the same. After impressing Real Madrid they realise they realised they were going after the wrong targets; that this man, Lewandowski, could take them to the next level.
However just like Neuer it seems they may have come too late as despite all the denials and the recent signing of fellow Dortmund talisman Mario Gotze the German champions remain the favourites to snap up the Polish striker this summer.
This year Real Madrid look like being beaten to the post by Bayern Munich for a semi-final star; just like Manchester United two years ago.
