Jose Mourinho's old rivalry with Liverpool already being ignited

Mourinho Dugout

Jose Mourinho isn’t even back in the Premier League and there is talk of him sticking it to old rivals Liverpool.

The Daily Mail has reported that Jose Mourinho is already working out a way to take Xabi Alonso to Chelsea with him this summer, if he’s confirmed as the new Chelsea boss after leaving Real Madrid.

All of the press speculation has suggested that the Portuguese coach is on the verge of a return to England, where he seems to already be getting one over on his old rivals Liverpool.

All season long there has been speculation suggesting Brendan Rodgers will try and re-sign Xabi Alonso to Liverpool, as his current contract with Real Madrid is due to expire next summer.

His role in the Real Madrid side doesn’t seem to be undoubted because he’s surrounded by several players of extreme quality in his position.

Any transfer back to Liverpool offers him the chance to become one of the club’s main first choice players, which is useful for the club as Rodgers is in the process of creating a very young team.

That makes him affordable to Liverpool, he would substantially improve their midfield and it offers him a way back to a football club where he is still adored on a huge scale.

However, he seems to have a very good relationship with Mourinho which would make any offer to follow him to Chelsea very appealing, in a deal that would cause big complications for Liverpool.

Some press reports have suggested that Mourinho will be handed a £100 million transfer fund to head into the summer with, which is five times the lowest valuation of Liverpool’s reported budget.

Liverpool will have to pray that Real Madrid are less than willing to allow Alonso to leave with Mourinho, with their refusal to sell to Chelsea being Liverpool’s best chance of nabbing the Spaniard if the Blues are officially in for him.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow because during his first spell with Chelsea, Mourinho often came up against Liverpool in a variety of high pressure situations with the Anfield club getting the better of him frequently.

That caused him to make some not so flattering comments about the club, which will still be fresh in the minds of many Liverpool supporters if Mourinho does return to the Premier League.

Following Real Madrid’s exit from the Champions League, Mourinho said he wanted to come back to England because he’s loved. Well if he pulls this deal off with his Chelsea return, he’d better stay well out of Merseyside for a little while.

Liverpool fans, what do you make of the news?
